New Resource: Short Link for the Bearing Witness Book

Next week, we will begin studying the Bearing Witness (bt) book at the Congregation Bible Study. A list of resources related to this book, that may be helpful to Chinese field language learners, is now available at:

Besides listing some great new official resources that are now available, this short link also lists the refreshed and re-uploaded web page for downloading the 3-line XLP-iPhone-A5 LN-A PDF files that had been made for the Bearing Witness book years ago, when it had previously been studied at the CBS. Perhaps some will find the particular features of these files helpful. (It should be noted, though, that the material in these files was based on an older printing of the Mandarin Bearing Witness book.)

MEotW: hùdòng

The Mandarin Expression of the Week is:

In the title of the Mandarin Enjoy Life Forever! book, what does “hùdòng” mean? How does it apply to the Enjoy Life Forever! book?

New Resources: Official Pīnyīn Publications on the WOL in Chinese Mandarin (Traditional) - 中文繁體(國語)

Official Pīnyīn web material is now also available for certain publications on the Watchtower Online Library (WOL) when the language is set to Chinese Mandarin (Traditional) - 中文繁體(國語). (Before, such official Pīnyīn web material was only available on the WOL when the language was set to Chinese Mandarin (Simplified) - 中文简体(普通话).) This new web material renders Traditional Chinese characters with Pīnyīn ruby text, kind of like the official Pīnyīn PDF files do. However, unlike the official Pīnyīn PDF files, which are digital versions of paper publications with fixed page sizes and line renderings, this official Pīnyīn web material inherits the ability of web material to adapt to displays of different shapes and sizes, making it much more mobile-friendly than PDFs, especially on smaller mobile devices.

Selecting the option to display Pīnyīn or not in the Watchtower Online Library (WOL) when the language is set to Chinese Mandarin (Traditional) - 中文繁體(國語) is done like it is when the language is set to Chinese Mandarin (Simplified) - 中文简体(普通话). See this post for more details.

The affected tiandi.info short links will gradually be updated as time allows.

New Resources: Official Pīnyīn Publications on the Watchtower Online Library (WOL)

Official Pīnyīn web material is now available for certain publications on the Watchtower Online Library (WOL) when the language is set to Chinese Mandarin (Simplified) - 中文简体(普通话). This new web material renders Simplified Chinese characters with Pīnyīn ruby text, kind of like the official Pīnyīn PDF files do.

While some unofficial apps and services have been around for a while that can produce computer-generated mobile-friendly Pīnyīn material (perhaps also with English meanings) for any Chinese publication, a big disadvantage of the material that they produce is that it has not been human-proofread. So, while such material can be quickly produced in great quantities, it contains significant quantities of errors, because computers do not have the wisdom and love required to adapt appropriately and lovingly to whatever life and human language may bring—human language, a remarkable gift from Jehovah, can potentially express all human thought, much of which still eludes modern computers. The official Pīnyīn web material that is now available can be relied upon to be of higher quality than any computer-generated material, since it has been human-proofread. (Of course, unofficial computer-generated material is generally better than nothing when it comes to publications for which official Pīnyīn material is not yet available.)

On the Watchtower Online Library (WOL), when the language is set to Chinese Mandarin (Simplified) - 中文简体(普通话) and when Pīnyīn ruby text is available for the loaded web page, an option must be selected from the menu displayed using the “hamburger menu” button on the bottom right for the Pīnyīn text to be displayed. (This setting is “remembered” like the other settings on this menu are. When Pīnyīn ruby text is not available for the loaded web page, the option is greyed out.)

This option can also be set using the ⚙ Preferences link near the bottom of WOL pages.

Many thanks to our God Jehovah and to our Leader Jesus, and to all the brothers and sisters who worked hard to make this official Pīnyīn web material available! Undoubtedly, it is just the first such mobile-friendly official Pīnyīn material and more is to follow, which will make it faster and easier for the many mobile device-using Mandarin field publishers around the world to be helped to more effectively speak in Mandarin “about the magnificent things of God”!—Acts 2:7–11.

The NWT Pinyin App Now Supports the “Sing Out Joyfully” Book

The NWT Pinyin app now supports the official lyrics-only Pīnyīn PDF file for the “Sing Out Joyfully” book that we are now using as our songbook. Accordingly, a link for it has been added to the tiandi.info/sjj short link.

[Update 2019-04-25: Unfortunately, it appears that this app is no longer in the App Store.]

New Resources: “Sing Out Joyfully” Bk. 2-line and 3-line PDFs

The following resources are now available for the “Sing Out Joyfully” songbook:

The resource listed first contains material covering all the songs. The lyrics-only files in the indicated folder at 3lines.org are evidently being produced song by song according to what songs will be required for upcoming meetings.

“God’s Love” Bk. 3-Line Material Up to Ch. 5 Checked

Starting on December 18, 2017, Mandarin Congregation Bible Study meetings are scheduled to start using the “God’s Love” book. (Interestingly, on that date, Cantonese Congregation Bible Study meetings are instead apparently scheduled to start using the Teach Us book. As far as I can recall, this will be the first time that the Mandarin and Cantonese CBS meetings use different publications.)

While 3-line material exists for the entire “God’s Love” book, it was produced many years ago, so it was not based on the current official 2017-02 Mandarin version. As of this writing, the existing 3-line material has been checked up to the end of Chapter 5, and so far, no differences have been found compared to the text of the current official 2017-02 Mandarin version.

However, during this checking, some errors were found in the existing 3-line material. The affected PDF files available for download at the below links have been revised with annotations indicating the errors that were found:

Unfortunately, some less advanced PDF-viewing apps such as iBooks do not fully support PDF annotations, but PDF annotations are well supported in modern PDF-viewing apps such as GoodReader, Documents, Adobe Acrobat Reader, etc.

Further checking will be done as time allows.

Official Cantonese Yale Romanization PDFs Now Available

Official Cantonese PDF files that use the Yale romanization of Cantonese have begun to become available for download on jw.org. Apparently, going forward, new official romanized Cantonese files will be using the Yale romanization of Cantonese, instead of the Sidney Lau romanization that had been used since the first official romanized Cantonese files began appearing.

A fairly up-to-date list of links to available official Cantonese files with Yale romanization can be found on the RTE site at this link:

Interestingly, among the links listed is one to the official Cantonese Yale PDF for the new “Sing Out Joyfully” (sjj) songbook, even though the official Pīnyīn file for that publication is not yet available. Historically, the official Pīnyīn file for a publication would generally become available before the official Cantonese romanization file for it does. Hopefully, the official Pīnyīn file for the “Sing Out Joyfully” (sjj) songbook will soon become available as well.

New App: NWT Pinyin

The iPad, the iPhone, and the iPod touch have revolutionized the way many of us in the Chinese field can acquire and use publications in the field, at the meetings, etc. However, it has been a challenge to look up scriptures in the official Pīnyīn New World Translation Bible PDF file on them. As a PDF file, that file is rooted in the print world, with its set page sizes and line endings, so it does not naturally or comfortably “live” on many mobile device displays, like computer-native web and EPUB material does. As a really big PDF file, it’s time-consuming and laborious to find just the chapter and verse that you want in it. It’s been frustrating that trying to make good use of one of our most important and useful publications on one of the devices that we most likely have with us has been such a slow and cumbersome process.

Recently, a free app became available on the App Store that almost perfectly solves this common problem:

When launched, it provides a simple button for downloading the official Pīnyīn New World Translation Bible PDF file from jw.org to the app. After that, the app provides fast and convenient iOS-native, JW Library-like controls for “teleporting” right to the chapter of the Bible book that you want. Once there, you can pinch or double-tap to zoom in as much as you want.

Why do I say that it’s just almost perfect? One thing I really wish it did better is that I wish it maintained the zoom level when moving to the next or previous page. As it is, when you do so, the zoom level resets to show one whole page on the display. That zoom level is often unusable, especially on smaller devices like the iPhone.

Basically, though, this app is an excellent tool for looking up scriptures in the official Pīnyīn New World Translation Bible PDF file as quickly and easily as we should be able to on the iPad, the iPhone, and the iPod touch, and it is the solution to this problem that I currently recommend.

[Update 2017-05-01: This app now also provides a simple button for downloading the official Pīnyīn songbook PDF file from jw.org to the app. After that, the app provides fast and convenient iOS-native, JW Library-like controls for “teleporting” right to the song that you want. Close to Jehovah Bk. 3-line, Scriptures, EPUB & Web Material for Ch. 11 Added

Close to Jehovah Bk. 3-line-with-scriptures EPUB & web material for ch. 11 has been added to:

The corresponding Trad.-Lau-Eng. 3-line-with-scriptures EPUB & web material has been discontinued because of having so few users, while still requiring about as much time and effort to produce as the corresponding Simp.-Pīnyīn-Eng. material. If it becomes evident at a future time that the number of those who would use the Trad.-Lau-Eng. 3-line-with-scriptures EPUB & web material has significantly increased, then production of that material may be resumed. Meanwhile, corresponding Trad.-Lau-Eng. letter/A4 size PDF files continue to be available on 3lines.org.

Note that:

  • The full 3-line text of all the cited scriptures is included in the above resources.
  • The above resources are mobile-friendly—the EPUB & web material is quite legible and usable on everything from desktop/laptop PCs and Macs to iPads and other tablets to iPhones and other smartphones.
  • The above resources contain paragraph links, footnote links, etc. to make it quick and easy to get around in the material, drastically reducing the amount of manual scrolling needed.
  • Like PDF files, EPUB files can be downloaded for offline viewing.
  • In common EPUB-reading apps like iBooks, EPUB files can be annotated, meaning that notes, highlighting, etc. can be added.
  • In common EPUB-reading apps like iBooks, the text size of the EPUB material can be adjusted to be quite large.
  • iBooks has an optional Night theme.
  • For your convenience, a short link is available for the above resources.

New Resources: Close to Jehovah Bk. 3-line, Scriptures, EPUB & Web Material

The Close to Jehovah Book (3-Line, XLP-iPhone-A5, LN-A, Scriptures, Revised Text PDFs) resource was mainly created to better serve mobile device users, who have become the growing majority of 3-line material users. However, because of the fixed page sizes and the fixed line endings that they inherited from the print world, any PDF files, even the A5 paper size ones, are a compromised solution for mobile device users.

Thus, the time and effort previously spent on producing the Close to Jehovah book A5 paper size 3-line PDF files will now be redirected to producing more natively mobile-friendly EPUB and web resources, now that they have become more practical to produce. Here are the first of these new resources [Update, 2013-07-13: The Cantonese Sidney Lau resources have been added to the list below as well.]:

Note that:

  • The full 3-line text of all the cited scriptures is included in the above resources.
  • The above resources are mobile-friendly—the EPUB & web material is quite legible and usable on everything from desktop/laptop PCs and Macs to iPads and other tablets to iPhones and other smartphones.

Close to Jehovah Bk. XLP-iPhone-A5 Size LN-A 3-Line Material for Ch. 9 Posted

The Pīnyīn+Simp. Chinese 3-line XLP-iPhone-A5 size PDF file for Chapter 9 of the Close to Jehovah book is now available for download:

The Sidney Lau+Trad. Chinese 3-line XLP-iPhone-A5 size PDF file for Chapter 9 will be available shortly. [Update, 2014-06-19: The Sidney Lau+Trad. Chinese file for Chapter 9 is now available for download as well.]

The files have LN-A (LinkNav and annotation (notes & highlighting)) support, and they contain the linked full text of cited scriptures. Pīnyīn+Simp. Chinese and Sidney Lau+Trad. Chinese versions of the files are available.

To help explain how the XLP-iPhone-A5 files may work well on a variety of mobile devices, the following paragraphs are included on the Close to Jehovah Book (3-Line, XLP-iPhone-A5, LN-A, Scriptures, Revised Text PDFs) page:

While the regular files use letter size as the paper size, these files named with “XLP-iPhone-A5” use A5 as the paper size, and are especially suited for use on devices such as the iPhone, the iPod touch, and other devices with similarly sized screens, such as Android phones. (See the 3-Line Material on the iPhone and the iPod touch page for instructions on how to use these files on an iPhone or an iPod touch.)

The XLP-iPhone-A5 files should also be a good fit on 6" (15.2 cm) screen Kindles and other similarly sized devices, as well as on tablets with 7" (17.8 cm) screens, as long as these devices have PDF support. (Note that landscape orientation may work best, as explained on the 3-Line Material on the iPhone and the iPod touch page.) Some may prefer to use these files on larger mobile devices like the Kindle DX or the iPad as well. (See the 3-Line Material on the iPad page for instructions on how to use these files on an iPad.)

Also, instructions are included re how to download the files on an iPad, an iPhone, or an iPod touch using GoodReader 4.

New Resources: Was Life Created? Br. (Pīnyīn, Web, Scriptures) Pages

I realized again recently that there is currently no official Pīnyīn PDF for the Was Life Created? brochure on jw.org, while the existing unofficial 3-line PDFs only cover about the first two-thirds or so of the brochure. So, there is a need for proofread Pīnyīn material for the remaining third or so of the Was Life Created? brochure.

To help fill that need, the following new resources have started to become available:

To begin with, proofread Pīnyīn web material is available for the section on page 29 of the brochure, entitled “Does it matter what you believe?” in English. I think this is one of the most important parts of the Was Life Created? brochure. Next, Jehovah willing, I will pick up from where the existing 3-line files left off.

(For more information on why I have moved on from producing 3-line PDFs to producing Pīnyīn and Pīnyīn/Sidney Lau-English web and EPUB material, see this post.)

Note that:

  • The material in the above resources has been carefully rendered and proofread.
  • The linked full text in Pīnyīn of all the cited scriptures is included in the above resources.
  • The above resources are mobile-friendly—they are quite legible and usable on everything from desktop/laptop PCs and Macs to iPads and other tablets to iPhones and other smartphones.
  • In the above resources, links are used extensively to make it quick and easy to get around in the material, drastically reducing the amount of manual scrolling needed.
  • The Offline Viewing sections of the above resources explain how to view them offline. Of course, in addition to being downloadable and viewable offline, the web pages of the above web resources can also be printed out from your web browser.
  • Turning mobile devices to landscape orientation causes the text in the above resources to become large-print text.
  • For your convenience, a short link is available for the above resources.

Also, the introductions explain why it’s good to use Pīnyīn as a writing system on its own.

Eventually, Pīnyīn-English web and Pīnyīn and Pīnyīn-English EPUB versions of the above resources should appear as well.
