The NWT Pinyin App Now Supports the “Sing Out Joyfully” Book

The NWT Pinyin app now supports the official lyrics-only Pīnyīn PDF file for the “Sing Out Joyfully” book that we are now using as our songbook. Accordingly, a link for it has been added to the tiandi.info/sjj short link.

Official Cantonese Yale Romanization PDFs Now Available

Official Cantonese PDF files that use the Yale romanization of Cantonese have begun to become available for download on jw.org. Apparently, going forward, new official romanized Cantonese files will be using the Yale romanization of Cantonese, instead of the Sidney Lau romanization that had been used since the first official romanized Cantonese files began appearing.

A fairly up-to-date list of links to available official Cantonese files with Yale romanization can be found on the RTE site at this link:

Interestingly, among the links listed is one to the official Cantonese Yale PDF for the new “Sing Out Joyfully” (sjj) songbook, even though the official Pīnyīn file for that publication is not yet available. Historically, the official Pīnyīn file for a publication would generally become available before the official Cantonese romanization file for it does. Hopefully, the official Pīnyīn file for the “Sing Out Joyfully” (sjj) songbook will soon become available as well.

New App: NWT Pinyin

The iPad, the iPhone, and the iPod touch have revolutionized the way many of us in the Chinese field can acquire and use publications in the field, at the meetings, etc. However, it has been a challenge to look up scriptures in the official Pīnyīn New World Translation Bible PDF file on them. As a PDF file, that file is rooted in the print world, with its set page sizes and line endings, so it does not naturally or comfortably “live” on many mobile device displays, like computer-native web and EPUB material does. As a really big PDF file, it’s time-consuming and laborious to find just the chapter and verse that you want in it. It’s been frustrating that trying to make good use of one of our most important and useful publications on one of the devices that we most likely have with us has been such a slow and cumbersome process.

Recently, a free app became available on the App Store that almost perfectly solves this common problem:

When launched, it provides a simple button for downloading the official Pīnyīn New World Translation Bible PDF file from jw.org to the app. After that, the app provides fast and convenient iOS-native, JW Library-like controls for “teleporting” right to the chapter of the Bible book that you want. Once there, you can pinch or double-tap to zoom in as much as you want.

Why do I say that it’s just almost perfect? One thing I really wish it did better is that I wish it maintained the zoom level when moving to the next or previous page. As it is, when you do so, the zoom level resets to show one whole page on the display. That zoom level is often unusable, especially on smaller devices like the iPhone.

Basically, though, this app is an excellent tool for looking up scriptures in the official Pīnyīn New World Translation Bible PDF file as quickly and easily as we should be able to on the iPad, the iPhone, and the iPod touch, and it is the solution to this problem that I currently recommend.

[Update 2017-05-01: This app now also provides a simple button for downloading the official Pīnyīn songbook PDF file from jw.org to the app. After that, the app provides fast and convenient iOS-native, JW Library-like controls for “teleporting” right to the song that you want. Once there, you can pinch or double-tap to zoom in as much as you want.]

New Feature: Picture Links

Picture links have begun to be added to the Pīnyīn & Pīnyīn/Sidney Lau-English web & EPUB resources. These picture links will send users of these resources to where the indicated official pictures and diagrams appear on the pages of jw.org and the WOL.

Here is an example of a picture link:

Note that:

  • The picture link directs users to where the image is displayed on the official website. It does not display the official image as if it was part of the unofficial resource the directing link is a part of.
  • On jw.org and the WOL, clicking or tapping on a picture or diagram pops up an enlarged display of it.
  • The picture link tells users how the picture should be referred to in Mandarin/Cantonese. In the above example, the picture link tells publishers that they can direct a Bible student’s attention to this picture by saying, “Qǐng kàn dì 8 hé 9 yè de túpiàn.” (“Qǐng kàn” is probably one of the first Mandarin expressions learned by those learning Mandarin for the Mandarin field, and the link provides the rest of the Mandarin words needed in this case.)

The first resources to be upgraded with these new picture links are:

I hope to be able to add these new picture links to other resources as well going forward.

New Printing Selected Pages From a PDF Information Page Posted

A new information page has been posted:

Here is the Introduction of this page:

This information page contains links to instructions for printing out selected pages from a PDF using a couple of the most common PC/Mac PDF-viewing apps.

As of this writing, early in 2014, more than half of the visits to the 3lines.org website are being made with tablets like the iPad and smaller mobile devices like the iPhone, and all signs indicate that this percentage will continue to grow rapidly. Suitably formatted Chinese language-assistive material (3-line, etc.) can just be viewed on such mobile devices without having to be printed out onto paper. This makes it much easier for users to have at their fingertips all the material they need, when they need it. It also saves users from the ongoing costs of the paper, ink/toner, and time and attention needed to print that material out onto paper.

Of course, for various reasons many still need or want to print out onto paper. However, they may not always need or want to print out an entire file at a time. This is especially the case with files that contain an entire publication rather than just a chapter of one. (Examples of files that contain an entire publication include the official Pīnyīn and Sidney Lau PDF files, and the existing unofficial Pīnyīn and Pīnyīn/Sidney Lau-English web pages and PDFs.) Even with a file that contains “only” a chapter’s worth of material, often users will only want to print out a few selected pages of it, rather than the whole thing.

Something that may understandably confuse some users is that with some PDFs, the page numbers shown in the content do not match with the page numbers that must be used for printing purposes. Also, some PDFs do not even have page numbers indicated in the content at all. For example, the official PDF files (English, Chinese, Pīnyīn, etc.) for the Jehovah’s Will brochure do not have visible page numbers, probably since the big Lesson numbers already provide strong indications of where one is in the publication. Another example is that the PDF files produced for more convenient printing of web pages like the Jehovah’s Will Brochure (Pīnyīn-English, Web, Scriptures) page omit visible page numbers in the content because:

  1. The Lesson numbers already provide strong indications of where one is in the publication.
  2. Commonly-used PDF-viewing apps clearly display the page numbers used for selecting pages to print, regardless of whether page numbers in the content match these, or even appear.
  3. With the best overall way that could be found to produce the PDFs, the only way to add visible page numbers would have produced visually unattractive results.
  4. With the best overall way that could be found to produce the PDFs, the only way to add visible page numbers would have added significantly to the number of pages that would have needed to be printed out, raising paper, ink/toner, and printing time costs for users.

The below information can help users to print out only selected pages from PDFs without unreasonable difficulty, even in cases such as those mentioned above.

Pīnyīn NWT Bible PDF Now Available on jw.org

I am very happy to report that the Pīnyīn edition of the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures is now available for download in PDF format from jw.org. Thanks go out to the one who tipped me off about this.

Now, anywhere we take our mobile devices, we can have the entire Pīnyīn Bible with us without having to carry around the beloved but big and heavy paper version.

I have prepared a new short link with information on how to obtain this and other Chinese field resources related to the New World Translation Bible, which has been given the code bi:

There is also a direct link to the official Pīnyīn New World Translation Bible PDF at this link:

tiandi.info Post Regarding the New Apple iPad Has Been Expanded

Those of you who don’t like computers as they are, but who would still like to do some useful “computery” things once in a while, like making use of the resources listed in the Links file, the new Apple iPad could be the device you’ve been waiting for.

This tiandi.info post regarding this remarkable new device has been greatly expanded since I first posted it, with additional material regarding Apple’s approach to product design, Apple’s industry-leading mobile platform, and, of particular interest to us, how the iPad could change for the better the way we do certain things in the Chinese field:

tiandi.info Post Regarding the Official pinyin Watchtower PDFs

I have recently come across some evidence that suggests that a significant number of people may be having difficulties finding on the jw.org web site the official pinyin Watchtower study article PDF files that are now available for download.

This post on tiandi.info contains step-by-step instructions on how to find these files, as well as comments on mobile viewing of the files:
