The RTE (Mand.) Web Lookup Page’s Results Now Include Audio Links

The search results of the Referenced Theo. Expressions (Chinese + Pinyin + English) Web Lookup page now render the pinyin pronunciations of the results as links which play the audio for the pronunciations when clicked. The audio is computer-generated using technology from Gradint. These audio links have been successfully tested in desktop browsers, as well in Mobile Safari, the default web browser on the iPhone, the iPod touch, and the iPad.

RTE (Mand.) Web Lookup has been added to the Links sidebar on the right of this page. A similar link has been added to the Links page at tiandi.info.

See this post for more information about the Referenced Theo. Expressions (Chinese + Pinyin + English) Web Lookup page.

Referenced Theo. Expressions Updated to 2011-01-20 Version, Mandarin Web Lookup Available

The Referenced Theo. Expressions files, available for download from the Referenced Theo. Expressions (Chinese + Pinyin + English) Downloads (note the slightly altered name) and Referenced Theo. Expressions (Chinese + Cantonese Romanisation + English) pages, have been updated. These files are meant to be relatively extensive lists of theo. expressions as they have been found to be rendered in the Chinese publications. Versions sorted by English and versions sorted by romanisation are both available.

The current version is now dated 2011-01-20. It contains 9334 expressions, compared to the 9156 expressions that were in the previous version. A Mandarin Pleco version, a Mandarin Wenlin version, and a Mandarin ChinaScribe data file are available in addition to the PDF files.

Here are some comments from the one who assembled this update to the RTE:

Sorry I just realised that a bug in my scripts was causing certain accented letters from Czech and Russian names to disappear from the PDFs, causing these names to be spelled incorrectly. (Not just the accent was missing, but the whole letter, and there wasn't even a blank space there! This affected the PDFs but not the other formats.)

Now fixed (along with a few more additions/corrections to the words)

Bookmarks have been added to the PDF files, and PDF annotation has been enabled on them, so “LN-A” (“Link Navigation-Annotation”) is included in their filenames. See the PDF Link Navigation page and the PDF Annotation (Notes & Highlighting) page for more information.

Note that the current version of Pleco for iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad now supports flashcards and user-created dictionaries. So, the RTE Pleco Instructions file now contains instructions for installing the RTE Pleco files in Pleco running on these devices. Also, these instructions have been rewritten for greater clarity, with more step-by-step details.

As a reminder, note that the Referenced Theo. Expressions (Chinese + Pinyin + English) Web Lookup page is now available as well. Rather than containing download links to the RTE data files, it contains a web form that can be used to look up Referenced Theo. Expressions (Chinese + Pinyin + English) information by English or by Simplified or Traditional Chinese characters.

Thanks go out to the ones who helped to produce this group of resources.

“My Follower” Bk. XLP-iPhone-A5 Size LN-A 3-Line Material for Ch. 18 and Back Cover Posted

3-line pinyin and Sidney Lau XLP-iPhone-A5 size files with LN-A (LinkNav and annotation (notes & highlighting)) for Chapter 18 and for the back cover of the “My Follower” book are now available for download from the “My Follower” Book (3-Line, XLP-iPhone-A5, LN-A) page.

Based on my recent experience with using such files on an iPad, the following sentence is included on the “My Follower” Book (3-Line, XLP-iPhone-A5, LN-A) page:

When zoomed so that one page fills an entire screen, the material in these files also renders at a good size on the iPad and other devices with similarly sized screens.

The relevant folders at the 3lines.org site contain an HTML file with a link to the “My Follower” Book (3-Line, XLP-iPhone-A5, LN-A) page.

Missionaries and Tourists

...is the title of a new post at tiandi.info. Here’s the description from the news feed:

Those with the missionary spirit are greatly appreciated in the Chinese field, but there is a saying that “everybody hates a tourist.”

NWT Audio Files Page Now Directs Visitors to jw.org

The NWT Audio Files page used to contain links to unofficial audio files of Mandarin NWT content read by computer. However, official human-read Mandarin NWT audio files are now available for download from jw.org, so the NWT Audio Files page now directs users to go there for such files. Also, these instructions are provided on how to access the download links to the Mandarin NWT audio files at jw.org:

  1. Click on the Downloads tab on the top left of the page.

  2. Under the Audio Recordings heading on the left side, click on the Bible link.

  3. In the Language dropdown box in the centre of the page, select Chinese Mandarin/Simplified or Chinese Mandarin/Traditional, depending on your preference. (Simplified or Traditional here refers to the type of Chinese characters used in the text embedded in the audio files for display in programs like iTunes, etc.)

  4. In the Bible Book dropdown box, select the Bible book for which you want audio files. Download links for those audio files should then automatically appear below the dropdown boxes.
