New Resource: Short Link for the Bearing Witness Book

Next week, we will begin studying the Bearing Witness (bt) book at the Congregation Bible Study. A list of resources related to this book, that may be helpful to Chinese field language learners, is now available at:

Besides listing some great new official resources that are now available, this short link also lists the refreshed and re-uploaded web page for downloading the 3-line XLP-iPhone-A5 LN-A PDF files that had been made for the Bearing Witness book years ago, when it had previously been studied at the CBS. Perhaps some will find the particular features of these files helpful. (It should be noted, though, that the material in these files was based on an older printing of the Mandarin Bearing Witness book.)

“God’s Love” Bk. 3-Line Material Up to Ch. 5 Checked

Starting on December 18, 2017, Mandarin Congregation Bible Study meetings are scheduled to start using the “God’s Love” book. (Interestingly, on that date, Cantonese Congregation Bible Study meetings are instead apparently scheduled to start using the Teach Us book. As far as I can recall, this will be the first time that the Mandarin and Cantonese CBS meetings use different publications.)

While 3-line material exists for the entire “God’s Love” book, it was produced many years ago, so it was not based on the current official 2017-02 Mandarin version. As of this writing, the existing 3-line material has been checked up to the end of Chapter 5, and so far, no differences have been found compared to the text of the current official 2017-02 Mandarin version.

However, during this checking, some errors were found in the existing 3-line material. The affected PDF files available for download at the below links have been revised with annotations indicating the errors that were found:

Official Cantonese Yale Romanization PDFs Now Available

Official Cantonese PDF files that use the Yale romanization of Cantonese have begun to become available for download on jw.org. Apparently, going forward, new official romanized Cantonese files will be using the Yale romanization of Cantonese, instead of the Sidney Lau romanization that had been used since the first official romanized Cantonese files began appearing.

A fairly up-to-date list of links to available official Cantonese files with Yale romanization can be found on the RTE site at this link:

Interestingly, among the links listed is one to the official Cantonese Yale PDF for the new “Sing Out Joyfully” (sjj) songbook, even though the official Pīnyīn file for that publication is not yet available. Historically, the official Pīnyīn file for a publication would generally become available before the official Cantonese romanization file for it does. Hopefully, the official Pīnyīn file for the “Sing Out Joyfully” (sjj) songbook will soon become available as well.

homenet.org No Longer in Operation, Short Link Pages Refreshed

homenet.org, which had been used to direct people to the Referenced Theocratic Expressions (RTE) and Pīnyīn/Sidney Lau WOL resources, is no longer in operation. Thus, new redirects to those resources have been created, and the URLs (web addresses) in the affected tiandi.info short link pages, e.g. Referenced Theocratic Expressions (RTE) Links (tiandi.info/rte), Good News Brochure Links (tiandi.info/fg), etc., have been updated.

While I was at it, I took the opportunity to refresh the information in and the formatting of the tiandi.info short link pages.

New Resources: Close to Jehovah Bk. 3-line, Scriptures, EPUB & Web Material

The Close to Jehovah Book (3-Line, XLP-iPhone-A5, LN-A, Scriptures, Revised Text PDFs) resource was mainly created to better serve mobile device users, who have become the growing majority of 3-line material users. However, because of the fixed page sizes and the fixed line endings that they inherited from the print world, any PDF files, even the A5 paper size ones, are a compromised solution for mobile device users.

Thus, the time and effort previously spent on producing the Close to Jehovah book A5 paper size 3-line PDF files will now be redirected to producing more natively mobile-friendly EPUB and web resources, now that they have become more practical to produce. New Resource: PinyinWOL & CantoneseWOL Android Apps

Here is the introduction at the above resource:

This app adds unofficial pinyin to the JW site and the Online Library. NO cloud servers, mirrors or proxies are used by this app; it connects to jw.org only. Pinyin is added by the little chip in your phone or tablet, not by this unofficial server, so the app should be fine in places where Web filtering is enforced (as long as jw.org is allowed).

FYI, here is a chart showing the percentage shares of the operating systems used to visit 3lines.org for the last few months:

New Feature: Picture Links

Picture links have begun to be added to the Pīnyīn & Pīnyīn/Sidney Lau-English web & EPUB resources. These picture links will send users of these resources to where the indicated official pictures and diagrams appear on the pages of jw.org and the WOL.

Here is an example of a picture link:

• [Dì 8 hé 9 yè de túpiàn (jw.org)]

Note that:

• The picture link directs users to where the image is displayed on the official website. It does not display the official image as if it was part of the unofficial resource the directing link is a part of.
• On jw.org and the WOL, clicking or tapping on a picture or diagram pops up an enlarged display of it.
• The picture link tells users how the picture should be referred to in Mandarin/Cantonese. In the above example, the picture link tells publishers that they can direct a Bible student’s attention to this picture by saying, “Qǐng kàn dì 8 hé 9 yè de túpiàn.” (“Qǐng kàn” is probably one of the first Mandarin expressions learned by those learning Mandarin for the Mandarin field, and the link provides the rest of the Mandarin words needed in this case.)

The XLP-iPhone-A5 size material posted below complements the Chinese Close to Jehovah book by adding romanization and English, both to the main text and to the full text of the cited scriptures.

The material is currently available in these versions:

• Simplified Chinese + Mandarin Pīnyīn
• Traditional Chinese + Cantonese Sidney Lau Romanization

While the linked full text of cited scriptures has appeared in the Pīnyīn and Pīnyīn/Sidney Lau-English web pages and EPUB files, I believe this is the first time they have been available in 3-line PDF files.
