Labels

I've just discovered what this site calls labels, which act like keywords. Clicking on one of them will call up a page with all the posts that have that label. E.g., clicking on an label will call up all the posts with the audio label, which would be handy if one is looking for audio content.

I have gone back and added labels to all the posts on this blog so far, and I will add appropriate labels to future posts as well.

Update: “Labels” have been renamed “tags” on this blog. See this post for more details.

Frequently Used Words Files Updated

The 2006-10 versions of the Frequently Used Words files have been posted to the Frequently Used Words page. Here is a note from the author about the new files:

I have corrected all the typos in the word list that I found, mostly very minor changes. These are done to the colums Pinyin and English only. Some of them are important, too, such as the tone corrections. A couple of them were totally wrong.

Earlier version included tone marks partly Taiwan style and partly the Mainland style. Considering that this list is mostly used among students outside Taiwan, I decided to try and make the tones consistently now according to the mainland tonal system (this is a little pity since in Taiwan the last syllable is not usually changed into a light tone which makes the speech more understandable). Additionally the tone exceptions of the characters "bu (not)" and "yi (one)" are now indicated consistently.

In the English colum the verb definitions with "to" are consistently in the front now.

I was told the third tones are not clear in some combinations, so space is added in some of these cases in the Pinyin colum.

These are the lines with changes in case anyone wants to go through them:

First NWT Audio File Posted

The first NWT audio file, for Ps. 119, has been posted. These are audio files of Mandarin NWT content read by computer. While the technology is not yet able to read the material quite as smoothly as a fluent human, I believe the results are good enough to be of assistance to those who need some audible examples to help them know how they should sound as they practise their Mandarin. Thanks to the one in a land with restrictions who is supplying these files.

Nov. 2005 HK km Lasting Peace Article Files

The Nov. 2005 km (Hong Kong edition only) contained an important article with revised instructions on the use of the Lasting Peace brochure. Links to files with an English translation of this article, based on work by Kenny Wang, have been added to the Chinese, Pinyin, & English Lasting Peace Brochure page. The files also contain all the revised study questions with added pinyin and English, one file using Simplified characters and the other file using Traditional characters.

Frequently Used Words

A web page has been set up for the Frequently Used Words files I received from someone who wishes to remain anonymous. Many thanks to that person, though, since, as it says in the introductions to those files, by learning the first 100 words you are helped to understand over about 41% of recent publications, and by learning the first 200 words, over about 50%.

Icon Links on Budapest Course Pages

The icon graphics at the top left corner on the English and Spanish Budapest Course pages used to link to the Theo. Chinese Links page that was on the web. Since this Links page is no longer on the web, but is now only being sent by email to those on my mailing list, the icons are now just icons - they don't link to anywhere anymore.

Some trivia: This icon design contains the Chinese character for "field" over a background that was my attempt at representing a golden wheat field, ripe for harvesting. It was originally developed for a PC-based territory database program before finding a home on the web.

New km Magazine Presentation Audio Files

Cantonese & Mandarin audio files for the 2006-07-15 w km magazine presentation and a Mandarin audio file for the second 2006-07 g km magazine presentation have been posted to the km Magazine Presentation Audio Files site.

I originally hoped to keep up with all the km magazine presentations in both Cantonese and Mandarin, however, time constraints have prevented me from doing so. My goal now is just to create and post audio files for as many current magazine presentations as I have time for.

If any of you (as individuals or teams):

  • can read out Cantonese or Mandarin well,

  • are set up to produce .mp3 files,

  • and are willing and able to help out with creating km magazine presentation audio files,

produce a sample .mp3 file of a km magazine presentation and email it to me, and we'll see what we can arrange.
