New Resources: Official Pīnyīn Web Material on jw.org for Certain Publications

Official Pīnyīn web material is now available on jw.org for certain publications.

To see if such material is available on jw.org for a certain publication, follow this path:

• LIBRARY > [Publication Type] > DISPLAY Chinese Mandarin (Simplified / Traditional) > [Publication Name] > Search > [Publication Web Link]

When a web page of text for that publication is loaded, a 显示拼音 checkbox will appear near the top of that page if Pīnyīn web material is available for it. (“显示拼音 (Xiǎnshì Pīnyīn)” means “Show Pīnyīn”.) Checking that checkbox will immediately cause Pīnyīn ruby text to appear over the Chinese characters on that web page. The setting will be “remembered” by your web browser for web pages like that web page.

Related information will be added to the affected short links as time allows.

Official Pīnyīn Jehovah’s Will Brochure PDF Now Available on jw.org

The official Pīnyīn PDF file for the Jehovah’s Will brochure is now available for download from jw.org.

The short link for Jehovah’s Will brochure resources has been updated accordingly:

As noted at the above short link, many unofficial Jehovah’s Will brochure resources are currently available as well. Additionally, Pīnyīn-English and Sidney Lau-English EPUB files for the Jehovah’s Will brochure are in the works, and should start to become available very soon, perhaps even later today or tomorrow.

New Resource: Good News Brochure Cantonese MP3 Audio Files

Cantonese MP3 audio files for the Good News brochure are now available for download on 3lines.org. The path to them is:

These files should especially be helpful when used along with the unofficial Sidney Lau WOL that recently became available.

Watchtower Online Library (WOL) With Pīnyīn (Unofficial) Now Has Sidney Lau Romanization Options As Well

I guess I’ll call it this now:

These are now the options re the added Pīnyīn/Cantonese Sidney Lau romanization (set by links at the bottom of the web page):

• Pinyin [Pīnyīn ruby text over Simplified or Traditional Chinese characters]
• Sidney Lau [Sidney Lau ruby text over Simplified or Traditional Chinese characters]
• PinOnly (click/tap on More first) [Pīnyīn text only]
• LauOnly (click/tap on More first) [Sidney Lau text only]

Note that the bottom of each page of this website warns that

“This page has been processed by an unofficial browsing tool. Chinese words have added phonetics that may contain mistakes.”

In other words, the added Pīnyīn/Sidney Lau romanization on this site is unofficial, and it has not been proofread. However, while official, or at least proofread, content is more ideal, it takes much time and effort to produce, and in its absence, there are sure to be many situations in which this site’s computer-generated content will be most helpful, and most definitely better than nothing, even if it is imperfect.

A nice additional feature is that hovering your mouse pointer over or clicking or tapping on an expression produces a message displaying that expression’s English meaning.

This amazing new resource has recently come to my attention:

This is an unofficial website that adds Pinyin to the Simplified Chinese and the Traditional Chinese Watchtower Online Library (WOL).

Note that the bottom of each page of this website warns that “This page has been processed by an unofficial browsing tool. Chinese words have added Pinyin that may contain mistakes.”

Hovering your mouse pointer over or clicking or tapping on an expression produces a message displaying the expression’s English meaning.

Origin of Life Br. 3-Line Material Posted, Was Life Created? Br. 3-Line Material Coming Soon

Letter/A4 size 3-line material for the Origin of Life brochure (the orange one) is now available for download from the 3lines.org site. At this time, only Simplified-Pinyin material is available.

At the 3lines.org home page, just answer the Witness-testing questions (no commas), click on the misc (Book Study) graphic, and follow the path Simplified (chs)/Mandarin - PinYin/Brochures.

3-line material for the Was Life Created? brochure (the blue one) will soon be available as well. It will be carefully proofread, and available in both Simplified and Traditional Chinese. The PDF files will have the LN-A features (Link Navigation and Annotation), and both iPad-Letter/A4 paper size and XLP-iPhone-A5 paper size files will be available, each on its own download page.

Password Protection Removed From Require Brochure (Chinese + Pinyin + English) Page Files

A password is no longer required to access the files from the Require Brochure (Chinese + Pinyin + English) page. This change will gradually be made to other resources as well on a case-by-case basis.

3-line files for the Does God Care and Purpose of Life brochures have been posted to the Publications (Mandarin) page. These files are relatively old now, and they were produced using an older method of implementing the 3-line material. However, some may still find them useful.

Minor 2009-10-27 Links File Update Posted

A minor update to the Links file, dated 2009-10-27, has been posted to the Chinese Links File page. Access information in recent Links emails is still valid. If you would like to receive a Links email with information on how to access this page, email me, providing information such as what group or congregation you’re with, who referred you to this site, etc.

The following minor tweaks have been made in response to email input:

Material up to ch. 5 of the revised 2007 Chinese Require br. is now available from the Require Brochure (Chinese + Pinyin + English) page. The Chinese translation of the 2007 version has been significantly updated compared to the original version.

The completed files based on the original pinyin Require br. are still available.

In view of the announcement about the Require br. in the July km, I do not plan to produce any more 3-line material for the 2007 version of the Require br. From what I’ve heard, many still seem to only have stocks of the original version for placing anyway.

Note: The page margins of all the 2007 Pinyin Require br. material have been revised to allow for more material per page, and thus fewer pages are needed overall. (There is now less margin area for notes, etc., compared to before, but the margins are still similar to those in recent pinyin material from the Society.) Also, a “gutter” has been added to compensate for the area needed for binding. Special thanks to a certain Mr. Lewis for prompting me onto the path that led to these enhancements.

Complete Require Br. Material Posted

The complete Chinese, Pinyin, & English Require br. material has finally been posted on the Chinese, Pinyin, & English Require Br. page! Both Simplified and Traditional Chinese versions are available.

Those of you who had printed out previous incomplete versions of the material may want to reprint with the current version, as the English translations have been revised from the beginning to the end to conform with the latest development of my English translation system. Basically, my current system follows these principles:

• As far as possible, the meaning of each individual Chinese character is translated literally according to how it is used in the context in which it appears.


• Curly brackets, or braces, i.e. { }, are used to surround sets of English words that together convey the literal meaning of the Chinese character(s) they are above.


• When a single English word or a set of English words surrounded by curly brackets is over two or more Chinese characters, that means that it corresponds to the literal meaning of each of those Chinese characters.


• When literal translations do not make sense, or are not understandable enough, then the effective meanings are used instead, surrounded by square brackets, i.e. [ ].


• English words corresponding to Chinese characters that are selected for their sound and not their meaning, such as those used for many names, are not surrounded by square brackets. However, if necessary, they will be surrounded by curly brackets to specify which Chinese characters they correspond to.

While some other recent 3-line material has been released by others without being proofread, which does have the benefit of allowing the material to be released more quickly, this Require br. material has been carefully translated and proofread so that those learning Mandarin can reliably use it to help increase their insight into the meanings of the Chinese characters and how they are used in various contexts. However, the material may of course still contain errors. If you find any, email me to let me know.
