Close to Jehovah Bk. XLP-iPhone-A5 Size LN-A 3-Line Material for Ch. 9 Posted

The Pīnyīn+Simp. Chinese 3-line XLP-iPhone-A5 size PDF file for Chapter 9 of the Close to Jehovah book is now available for download:

The Sidney Lau+Trad. Chinese 3-line XLP-iPhone-A5 size PDF file for Chapter 9 will be available shortly. [Update, 2014-06-19: The Sidney Lau+Trad. Chinese file for Chapter 9 is now available for download as well.]

The files have LN-A (LinkNav and annotation (notes & highlighting)) support, and they contain the linked full text of cited scriptures. Pīnyīn+Simp. Chinese and Sidney Lau+Trad. Chinese versions of the files are available.

To help explain how the XLP-iPhone-A5 files may work well on a variety of mobile devices, the following paragraphs are included on the Close to Jehovah Book (3-Line, XLP-iPhone-A5, LN-A, Scriptures, Revised Text PDFs) page:

While the regular files use letter size as the paper size, these files named with “XLP-iPhone-A5” use A5 as the paper size, and are especially suited for use on devices such as the iPhone, the iPod touch, and other devices with similarly sized screens, such as Android phones. (See the 3-Line Material on the iPhone and the iPod touch page for instructions on how to use these files on an iPhone or an iPod touch.)

The XLP-iPhone-A5 files should also be a good fit on 6" (15.2 cm) screen Kindles and other similarly sized devices, as well as on tablets with 7" (17.8 cm) screens, as long as these devices have PDF support. (Note that landscape orientation may work best, as explained on the 3-Line Material on the iPhone and the iPod touch page.) Some may prefer to use these files on larger mobile devices like the Kindle DX or the iPad as well. (See the 3-Line Material on the iPad page for instructions on how to use these files on an iPad.)

Also, instructions are included re how to download the files on an iPad, an iPhone, or an iPod touch using GoodReader 4.

The relevant folders at the 3lines.org site contain an HTML file (web page) with a link to the Close to Jehovah Book (3-Line, XLP-iPhone-A5, LN-A, Scriptures, Revised Text PDFs) page.

New Typeface for Pīnyīn and Pīnyīn-English Material

After much research and consideration, I have decided to change the default typeface for the Pīnyīn and Pīnyīn-English material from Helvetica Neue/Arial to Gentium Basic. (Helvetica Neue, Helvetica, Arial, and “sans-serif” will be set as the fallback typefaces.)

Some reasons for this are:

  • While Helvetica Neue, Arial, etc. would be rendered using local font files (ones residing on the client device itself), the Gentium Basic font files will be served from a web server. This will help eliminate dependence on certain font files (and certain versions of those font files) being available on users’ devices.
  • Most modern web browsers now support this capability, making it workable for web users.
  • With the right programming code, EPUB files can also support included font files.
  • Gentium Basic’s licence allows for such usage for free, whereas the licences of Helvetica Neue, Arial, etc. do not.
  • Increased certainty about what font file will be used to render certain material makes it more certain that that material will be rendered properly on users’ devices—that certain things will line up properly, etc.
  • Helvetica Neue, Arial, etc. have a clean, neutral appearance that many like (Interestingly, “Helvetica” means “Swiss” in Latin.), but Gentium Basic should prove to be more readable. For example, it makes it easier to tell similar-looking characters apart from one another, such as “i”, “I”, and “l”.
  • The website of Gentium Basic’s designer has information that shows that he has thought and researched deeply about the design of diacritics, which is what Pīnyīn tone marks are. Indeed, the increased size and clarity of Gentium Basic’s Pīnyīn tone marks should especially help to make Pīnyīn text easier to read.
  • While Helvetica Neue, Arial, etc. can seem a little sterile, Gentium Basic has a more “artful”, yet friendly style. Hopefully this will make the Pīnyīn and Pīnyīn-English material even more appealing.

Some Pīnyīn and Pīnyīn-English material has already been converted to use the Gentium Basic typeface, and eventually more of it will be so converted.
