Chinese Links File Page Updated With Note

The admittedly long-neglected Chinese Links File page has been updated with the following note:

UPDATE (2013-08-30): This resource, often called the Links file, is relatively monolithic and difficult to maintain, and some users evidently find it difficult to use as well. There may still be value in an indexed, relatively comprehensive listing of the available Chinese field resources, so I may still try to work on this as time allows, but going forward I will be focusing on the following resources for directing people to currently recommended Chinese field resources:

Updated Wilmington Mandarin Course Textbook Files Now Available

Updated Wilmington Mandarin course textbook files, dated August 22, 2013, are now available for download from the Mandarin Course from Wilmington page (courses short link: tiandi.info/courses).

Here is a comment from the creator of these files about this update:

“The audio files have not changed. I simply changed some formatting and expanded a couple of pages (for example: The section on "zhidao" and "renshi" was really short. I made it into a full page instead of half a page.)”

Also of note is that in view of the recently released Chinese Insight book omitting the section on p. 328 of the English Insight book that discusses the Chinese character “船 (chuán)”, the paragraph on p. 9 of the Wilmington Mandarin course textbook that previously mentioned “船” has been rewritten to no longer mention this character and the unprovable speculation about it.

Jehovah’s Will Brochure Pīnyīn-English Web Material for Lesson 11 Added

Jehovah’s Will brochure Pīnyīn-English web material for Lesson 11 has been added to:

Note the following re the above resources:

  • The existing 3-line PDFs already cover up to Lesson 8. (Go to tiandi.info/jl for the links.) I plan to first cover Lesson 9 to the end with the new Pīnyīn-English web pages, and then go back and fill in the material for Lessons 1 to 8.
  • For your convenience, a short link is available for the above resources.
  • The full text in Pīnyīn-English of all the cited scriptures is included in them.
  • They are mobile-friendly—they are quite legible and usable on everything from desktop/laptop PCs and Macs to iPads and other tablets to iPhones and other smartphones.
  • The Recommended Browsers: sections in them contain information about how to get the best viewing experience.
  • Besides being viewable online, they can also be downloaded and used offine. Of course, they can be printed out from your web browser as well. (More details are included in their Offline Viewing and Printing sections, which include a link to a special PDF file for printing out the content of these web pages.)

Also, the introductions explain why it’s good to use Pīnyīn as a writing system on its own.

See the below post for an introduction to the above resources:

Going forward, I plan to focus primarily on producing Pīnyīn and Pīnyīn-English web pages such as the above, because they offer various advantages both for myself and for users.

I am also working on eventually making available some more EPUB files, which are relatively easy to produce from the Pīnyīn and Pīnyīn-English web pages. EPUB files can be easily downloaded and used offline, and they can also be annotated.

Special PDFs for Printing Out the Pīnyīn-English Web Pages Now Available

For anyone who wants to do so, the Pīnyīn-English web pages can already be printed out from the web browsers being used to view them. Now, special PDF files with the content of the Pīnyīn-English web pages are also available, that provide smaller text sizes and easier control over which pages to print out.

These PDF files are linked to from the Introduction and Disclaimer ▶ Offline Viewing and Printing sections of the Pīnyīn-English web pages.

Note that these special PDFs are just for printing out, so they do not have working links corresponding to the links in the Pīnyīn-English web pages.

FYI, these are the currently available Pīnyīn-English web pages:

New Resources: Jehovah’s Will Brochure (Pīnyīn-English, Web, Scriptures) Pages

While there have been 3-line PDFs for part of the Jehovah’s Will brochure for a while now (links can be found at the short link for Jehovah’s Will brochure material, tiandi.info/jl), the PDF format is rooted in the print world, with its fixed page sizes. As mobile devices became more and more common, it was found that the letter/A4 page size originally used for the 3-line PDFs made them quite hard to use on smaller mobile devices such as the iPhone, and it also made for smaller-than-intended text even on larger tablets like the iPad.

(How common are mobile devices getting to be? One highly relevant indication is that visits to 3lines.org from mobile devices are on track to start outnumbering visits to that site from desktops/laptops in just a few months.)

Eventually, some 3-line PDFs that used A5 as their page size began to be produced, which usually worked satisfactorily on mobile devices. However, producing A5 versions of 3-line PDFs requires extra work from already-busy 3-line producers, so A5 versions have been produced for only some of the 3-line PDFs. Even when they are available, they present extra complexity to users who need to compare them to the letter/A4 PDFs and then choose which to use in their situation.

As well, the PDF format is not the native format of the web browser you would use to go to the download pages of the PDF files. Thus, while PDF files can be downloaded, and often even viewed, with a web browser, they still represent some added complexity for people looking for Chinese field resources on the web.

So, for reasons such as those above, I have come up with a new set of resources for the Jehovah’s Will brochure:

Note: Be sure to view the Pīnyīn-English web pages above using one of the web browsers listed in their Recommended Browsers: sections. Otherwise, the Pīnyīn-English web material in them will not look its best.

To start with, material is available on these new resources covering from the front cover to the introduction, and also Lesson 9 of the Jehovah’s Will brochure. (The existing 3-line PDFs already cover up to Lesson 8. I plan to first cover Lesson 9 to the end with the new Pīnyīn-English web pages, and then go back and fill in the material for Lessons 1 to 8.) The full text in Pīnyīn-English of the cited scriptures is included.

Of course, while the Pīnyīn-English web pages were designed to just work on desktop and laptop PCs and Macs and on modern mobile devices with displays of various shapes and sizes, they can still be printed out from the web browsers used to view them, as long as these have printing capability.

More background information can be found in the Introductions of these new web pages:

Pīnyīn, With English Ruby Text

This material contains text from the Chinese Jehovah’s Will brochure, written in Pīnyīn. It also includes English ruby text that has been bundled with the Pīnyīn text that it shows the meaning of. Thus, while making better use of limited display real estate on mobile devices and requiring less paper to print out compared to corresponding 3-line material, this material provides us Mandarin-learners with assistance in the two language aspects we require in order to be able to discuss or study the Jehovah’s Will brochure with someone in Mandarin:

  1. The pronunciations of the Mandarin words used
    • These show us how to communicate the brochure’s message in Mandarin.
  2. The meanings of the Mandarin words used
    • These show us what is being communicated in Mandarin.

The below-listed Pīnyīn-only web pages will continue to be available as well:

With the above Pīnyīn-only web pages, when the mobile device they are loaded on is turned to landscape orientation, the text in them becomes large-print text. (The text of the Pīnyīn-English web pages is set to stay the same size when the device is turned to landscape orientation, so that there is more room for the English ruby text.)

A Pīnyīn-only EPUB file for the Jehovah’s Will brochure is also available:

I plan to eventually make a Pīnyīn-English EPUB file for the Jehovah’s Will brochure available as well.

Jeremiah Bk. XLP-iPhone-A5 Size LN-A 3-Line Material for Ch. 14 Posted

3-line XLP-iPhone-A5 size files for Chapter 14 of the Jeremiah book are now available for download from the Jeremiah Book (3-Line, XLP-iPhone-A5, LN-A) page. The files have LN-A (LinkNav and annotation (notes & highlighting)) support, and they are available in Pinyin+Simp. Chinese and Sidney Lau+Trad. Chinese versions.

To help explain how the XLP-iPhone-A5 files may work well on a variety of mobile devices, the following paragraphs are included on the Jeremiah Book (3-Line, XLP-iPhone-A5, LN-A) page:

While the regular files use letter size as the paper size, these files named with “XLP-iPhone-A5” use A5 as the paper size, and are especially suited for use on devices such as the iPhone, the iPod touch, and other devices with similarly sized screens, such as Android phones. (See the 3-Line Material on the iPhone and the iPod touch page for instructions on how to use these files on an iPhone or an iPod touch.)

The XLP-iPhone-A5 files should also be a good fit on 6" (15.2 cm) screen Kindles and other similarly sized devices, as well as on tablets with 7" (17.8 cm) screens, as long as these devices have PDF support. (Note that landscape orientation may work best, as explained on the 3-Line Material on the iPhone and the iPod touch page.) Some may prefer to use these files on larger mobile devices like the Kindle DX or the iPad as well. (See the 3-Line Material on the iPad page for instructions on how to use these files on an iPad.)

Also, instructions are included re how to download the files on an iPhone or an iPod touch using GoodReader for iPhone, and how to download the files on an iPad using GoodReader for iPad.

The relevant folders at the 3lines.org site contain an HTML file (web page) with a link to the Jeremiah Book (3-Line, XLP-iPhone-A5, LN-A) page.
